Special Session 1: Media in Language and Communication: Written, Spoken, and Typed Communication

Session Introduction

This session explores how different communication media shape the ways in which language is produced, interpreted, and used in social interaction. It brings together research on spoken, written, and typed communication, as well as emerging forms of communication that combine multiple channels and modalities. The track welcomes theoretical, empirical, and interdisciplinary approaches to language and communication across a range of media and interactional settings. Studies comparing different media or examining the transition between spoken, written, typed, and multimodal communication are also encouraged.

SESSION Chair

Bio

Yasuharu Den is Professor at the Graduate School of Humanities, Chiba University, Japan. He holds a PhD from Kyoto University. His research focuses on quantitative and qualitative analyses of language and communication, using methodologies including corpus linguistics, multimodal conversation analysis, and field research. He has published his work in influential international and Japanese journals and conference proceedings. He has led several major research projects on the development of linguistic corpora, including the construction and analysis of spoken and multimodal corpora. He has also organized a series of panel sessions at the International Pragmatics Conference focusing on interaction in the instruction/learning and transmission of Japanese traditional and martial arts.
